The most common and easiest way to do it is, to use a VPN on your Android device. Now you might be thinking about how to setup VPN on your Android phone. If that’s the case, you should first learn what a VPN is if you haven’t already.

Basically, VPN is a system in which a computing device can reroute the internet traffic through a specific server or a specific computer present anywhere in this world. VPN is generally used by people for security purposes as it lets you access the internet from a place where you’re not present physically. If you’re just starting out with the VPN it’s recommended that you go for TunnelBear, as its free and very simple to use. However, if you want good internet speeds even when you’re on VPN you can use SurfEasy.

Open VPN networks

Android devices don’t include integrated the support for the OpenVPN servers like the PCs do. However, you can use the OpenVPN services through the third-party apps that act exactly like the OpenVPN services.  You can try downloading and installing OpenVPN connect app available in the Google Play Store, which is the official app developed by OpenVPN. This app works on all Android phones running Android 4.0 or higher and the best part is the application doesn’t require you to root the phone.

Android’s Built-in VPN

All the Android phones come with the integrated support for PPTP and L2TP VPNs. This means that you can connect to these VPNs without any need to download third-party apps. Here’s how to setup VPN on your Android device.

  • Open settings in your device.
  • Click on more under the Wireless & Network settings.
  • Tap on the VPN option present inside the Wireless & Network setting.
  • Click on the + or the add button and provide the VPN details.
  • Enter a name of your VPN
  • Then select the type of VPN server that you wish to connect to.
  • Once you do that, enter the server address of the VPN.
  • After the setup is complete you can tap on the VPN and start using it.

The aforementioned steps will let you create a VPN using Android’s VPN manager. You can also setup different VPNs if you want on your device, and can also switch between them.  To connect to the VPN stored in the phone you’ll have to provide the Username and Password details every time. Once you’re connected to a VPN you’ll see a VPN activated notification in your notification drawer.

If you’re using a device running Android 4.3 or higher then you’ll also have the option to keep the VPN always on. This is a good feature to use if you access a lot of public networks that are open for everyone. To enable this feature all you need to do is just tap on the icon present next to the VPN name and then turn on the Always-on VPN option.
